About this experience
A mix of cultures in one of the largest ports of the Mediterranean has greatly influenced the appearance and character of the city. We will highlight its main features, visit iconic landmarks, explore the historical museum, descend into the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, and see the palace of the last king of Egypt. Get to know the legacy of Alexander the Great from beginning to end.
What to Expect
- Alexandria National Museum, showcasing about 1800 artifacts from different eras: Pharaonic, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic. You will see artifacts from relatively modern times, from the Muhammad Ali dynasty to the revolution of July 23, 1952.
- Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa - an architectural complex with three levels containing tombs of Roman nobility. You can descend into the underground rotunda via a spiral staircase. You will see tricliniums where the relatives of the deceased feasted on stone benches, and statues of Sobek and Anubis in Roman armor.
- Alexandria Library - the largest in the world. It currently houses 8 million books. You will visit its open courtyard with statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy I, and observe the library building from the outside.
- Citadel of Qaitbay - a fortress built on the site of the ancient Alexandria Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You will hear the impressive history of the citadel, which has endured captures and destructions several times.
