About this experience
In the Nile Delta, you will discover a port city founded before our era. A city where Arab color and the atmosphere of European Mediterranean harmoniously blend. Dive into this rich history and culture, touch the stones that have seen the sunrises and sunsets of civilizations. Our program includes the Catacombs, ancient Roman ruins, a carved mosque, the Qaitbay Fortress, and local delicacies.
What to Expect
Ancient and Modern Alexandria
The city is named after its founder - King Alexander the Great. I will start the story about Alexandria from his times. You will learn about the layout and the role of the city as the capital of the Ptolemaic Kingdom and an important center of the Hellenistic world. Understand where the legendary Cleopatra's palace stood, hear about the city's decline and its life today. You will also get a list of useful places: cafes with tasty coffee, worthy fish restaurants, shops with traditional sweets, and stalls with the best fruits.
In our route:
Kom El Shoqafa Catacombs - an underground treasure of Alexandria, built in the 1st century CE. Here you will find a mixture of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman styles like nowhere else. Exploring the catacombs, you will learn about life and death in the time of Cleopatra and the following centuries, and at the same time, you will uncover why the ancient Egyptian god Anubis is depicted with the body of an ancient Roman warrior.
Pompey's Pillar - a 30-meter high Roman granite obelisk located on the ruins of an ancient temple. We will discuss how it was made and what was the real name of this structure.
Abu Al-Abbas Al-Mursi Mosque of the 14th century. The mosque is named after a Muslim preacher, about whom I will tell you, and also explain why this mosque is so popular among the people of Egypt.
Qaitbay Fortress, built on the ruins of one of the Seven Wonders of the World - the Pharos of Alexandria. You will discover the chronicles of this monumental structure, climb to the top of the fortress, and enjoy views of the sea and the city.
