About this experience
Escape the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and spend a day on the coast of Shonan surrounded by the open ocean, old majestic trees, cliffs, and blooming shrubs. Learn what attracted aesthetes, generals, and monks to these places besides the beautiful views, and uncover the mystery of Japanese culture.
What to Expect
Main and Secret Places of the Coast
You will visit Shichirigahama Beach, stand on the Tago-gafuzi cliff, stroll along green paths, and enjoy the beautiful view of the surroundings from the lighthouse. You will also explore the sacred cave of Iwaya, find the Yasaka shrine, and if the weather is favorable, catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji in the distance. If desired, you can also try local specialties: whole octopus or squid crackers and steamed sardines.
Immersion in Japanese History and Culture
The coast of Shonan has long been known to the Japanese. I will reveal what attracted artists like Hokusai and Utamaro, military leaders Minamoto and Tokugawa, and Buddhist preachers and monks Kukai and Nichiren. I will also show famous Japanese paintings associated with the coast, talk about the gods inhabiting it, and help you find unusual places hidden among the winding paths.
