About this experience
Regensburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is not a museum, it is a modern city with deep historical roots. And I will help you understand the diversity and liveliness of this city, the combination of innovations and traditions.
What to expect
Regensburg, located at the confluence of the Danube and Regen rivers, was once a Roman city guarding the northern border of the Great Empire. Even today, you can touch the ancient gates - 'Porta Praetoria' - built by ancient Roman legionaries dating back to 179 AD! Unlike many cities, Regensburg has not lost its provincial charm: winding streets still adhere to the plans of Roman military governors.
Walking across the Stone Bridge over the Danube (this bridge is nearly 200 years older than Charles Bridge in Prague!), you will learn why the water level differs on one side and the other. And here it is - the 'Danube Strudel'! (no, it's not about dessert!). The appetizing aroma of fried sausages will lead you to the other side? Then we will head to the 'Historical Sausage Kitchen' and order sausages! And definitely with sauerkraut! And then I will help you find the very first cafe in Regensburg. Since the 17th century, you can enjoy coffee and sweets there.
A visit to the Cathedral of St. Peter in the city center is a must-see, where the 'Regensburg church sparrows' perform. You cannot miss the 'Scots Monastery'. It has long been known that it has no relation to Scotland, but debates over the interpretation of the portal design continue to this day. The facades of the houses, richly decorated or painted with motifs from legends, are striking and reminiscent of fortresses with towers. The buildings have been preserved since the Middle Ages, and they were inhabited by wealthy Germans.
In the southern part of Regensburg, the palace of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis is located. They once made their fortune by engaging in postal business. Their descendants are alive and well today and are not impoverished at all. In part of the castle complex, you can visit a restaurant with a brewery owned by descendants of the famous dynasty.
