About this experience
The UNESCO World Heritage status usually doesn't surprise, but the historic center of Bamberg is included in it entirely! It's a unique (not just in words) city: the local architecture from a 1000 years ago has not been damaged during bombings. You will stroll through its fairytale-like medieval streets with half-timbered buildings and magnificent cathedral - no wonder the local Germans consider themselves the happiest in Germany. The program includes the main attractions of the city, picturesque canals, and the harmony of past chronicles and leisurely modernity.
What to expect
An impressive number of attractions
In focus will be the places not to miss in Bamberg: the Cathedral with its legend of the Cathedral frogs, the New and Old Episcopal Residences, the curious Old Town Hall hanging over the water. You will learn and see how history is reflected even in the cityscape. Hear stories about passionate gardeners, conflicts between bishops, monks, and citizens that influenced the city's structure. And enjoy the views of Bamberg's Venice - the legacy of a fishing village - with boats and wharves.
Stories behind facades
You will get lost in alleys whose ancient houses will delight the eye with unusual roofs, bay windows, and delightful door handles. Behind every door hides the story of Bamberg's residents. You will learn about the famous inhabitants of the city whose talents have earned them fame far beyond Bavaria and all of Germany. It is here that the writer-fairy tale writer Hoffman worked, who came up with "The Nutcracker", the inventor of jeans Levi Strauss started his success story, and the future aircraft designer Willy Messerschmitt launched flying models.
A word about gastronomy
We will tell you about the features of the Franconian region's cuisine and the traditional dishes of Bamberg, as well as recommend a historic brewery where they have been brewing "smoked" beer according to the unchanged recipe since the 15th century. You can drop by for lunch and try Franconian pork shoulder or onion stuffed with meat "Bamberg-style".
