About this experience
Ancient Augsburg boasts a history that dates back to before the Birth of Christ! In just 2.5 hours, you will explore the city founded by the Romans, the trading Augsburg of the Middle Ages, and the times of the Bavarian kingdom. The past will come alive against the backdrop of the most interesting architectural landmarks like the Town Hall with the Golden Hall, the Cathedral, the luxurious houses on the street, and even in the 'socialist paradise' of a single block.
What to Expect
Legends of antiquity:
Augsburg is older than any other city in Germany except Trier. Five preserved fortress gates surround the once independent imperial city. The Bird and Red Gates, the Fishermen's Gate, St. Jacob's Gate, and the Gate of the bridge over the Vertah River are now some of the city's main attractions and are completely different from each other. You will see architectural wonders unmatched in Germany. We will visit the luxurious Maximilianstraße street with its colorful 16th-century mansions and unique fountains. We will see the Town Hall on the main square and its Golden Hall, family houses of famous burghers with their ancestral crests on the facades, and a romantic pier for boats.
Local landmarks:
Augusburg also has a 'social paradise', where life once cost just one guilder. Surprised that this is possible, especially in capitalist Germany? This district with 'Khrushchevkas' is already several hundred years old. The two-story houses were intended for the poor and those in difficult life situations. By the way, one of the apartments was once occupied by master stonemason Franz Mozart - the grandfather of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Religious center:
You will be impressed by Augsburg's churches: the XII century Cathedral adorned with stained glass portraits of prophets, the Basilica of Saints Ulrich and Afra, the Church of St. Anne. And the ancient synagogue can compete in beauty perhaps only with the one in Budapest! So lovers of antiquity have plenty to explore. Every stone in Augsburg can tell its own story. I guarantee you will find it fascinating!
