Reflections on the Roman Empire: Trip from Barcelona to Tarragona and Sitges
About this experience
During this journey, you will visit two vibrant Catalan cities. In Tarragona, you will explore Ancient Roman monuments and learn about the life of the Second Rome, as well as visit the largest cathedral in Catalonia and enjoy the panoramas from the 'Balcony of the Mediterranean'. On the way back, we will stop in Sitges. I will tell you about its transformation from a fishing village to one of the world's trendiest resorts.
What to Expect
Tarragona - an open-air museum city
You will visit a beautiful and cozy city located on a high hill over the Mediterranean waters. It is known for its largest cathedral in Catalonia and rich ancient Roman heritage, as Tarragona was once the capital of the Spanish territory of the Roman Empire.
During the walk, we will cover the history of the city from the 3rd century BC to the present day. We will focus on the period when the city was called Tarraco and held the honorable title of the Second Rome, as well as discuss the medieval and modern periods.
You will see all the main sights of Tarragona: ancient monuments, the Old Town, the Cathedral, Corsini Square, Royal Square, the church of the Barefoot Carmelites Order, and much more. Additionally, I will guide you through the charming streets to the romantic viewing platform 'Balcony of the Mediterranean', which offers a breathtaking view of the ancient Roman amphitheater and the sea.
Sitges - the Spanish Saint-Tropez
On the way back, we will visit a city that only pretends to be a simple fishing village. In reality, it is one of the trendiest resorts in Spain, where life is vibrant year-round. During the walk, we will delve into Sitges' past and its fate after the 1960s when it became the second Saint-Tropez.
You will explore the main seaside promenade of the resort and the old quarter with numerous Gothic arches and modernist villas. You will see modest chapels next to luxurious palaces, as well as ultra-modern boutiques and antique shops hidden in the remains of the fortress wall. And of course, I will introduce you to the heart of the Old Town - the Saint Bartholomew's church, perched on a rocky cliff washed by the sea.
