What to expect
A Different Tarragona
Ancient Roman amphitheater, medieval streets and modernist buildings, Carmelite monks' church, cathedral, and 'living' Castells towers - these are the most recognizable symbols of Tarragona. I invite you to look at another, no less interesting side of the city, taking a walk through the fishing quarters. Against the backdrop of piers, docks, sighted fishing boats, and huge ultra-modern yachts, you will touch the history, lifestyle, and atmosphere of the non-touristy and very picturesque Tarragona.
El Serrallo - the brightest fishing district of the city
Walking through its streets, you will learn how people live in this part of the city and what one of the largest ports in Spain is famous for. On Moll de Pescadors promenade, you will meet an elderly fisherman mending a net, a yawning cat on the doorstep, and a young family gazing into the distance. Leaving the everyday scenes, you will head to Plaça de Bonet, where you will inspect the monument to the fishing family and the main pride of the district - St. Peter's Church, near which we will talk about the symbolism of its patron saint and the history of the church's construction. The program also includes the beautiful El Serrallo theater, where you can take excellent photos. And later I will introduce you to the Romanesque architecture of St. John the Baptist Church, a monument of early Gothic.
Authentic port atmosphere
The path to the open sea will lead you through Moll de Costa promenade. At Plaça dels Carrers square, you will hear about the mystery of the statue of the ancient Roman god of trade, Mercury, inspect modernist houses with latticed lanterns. You will see old cranes, coastal cannons guarding the port, and cormorants. You will listen to the squeak of taut ropes and seagull cries, the flapping of sails, and the sound of waves hitting the side of a silvery schooner, just arrived from Jamaica. You will try to turn a real helm, check your watch against the port tower clocks, and make a cherished wish by touching the magical grille.
Impressive panoramas and historical monuments
Port life will unfold before you not only in an atmospheric domestic guise but also in stories of outstanding people and events related to Tarragona's maritime history. These conversations will be prompted by the archive building, Maritime Museum, General Prima square, and the monument to Admiral Roger de Lluria. And in the end, you will visit the Mediterranean Balcony, which offers an amazing view of the amphitheater and the Balearic Sea.
🍤 🍸 During the walk, you will come across a whole row of restaurants, in one of which you can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine in one of its best executions after the tour.
