About this experience
Once a beautiful city, Tarragona has come a long way from a small Iberian settlement to the Spanish capital of the Roman Empire. I invite you to explore the interesting and rich history of the city, where ancient monuments coexist with modern sculptures, uncover the mysteries of Tarragona, and learn something new about Catalan traditions, many of which originated here. If you enjoy traveling back in time, strolling through ancient streets, and hearing medieval legends, then this is the place for you!
What to Expect
Spanish City with an Ancient Atmosphere
First, we will travel back to the times of the ancient Romans, exploring the ancient part of Tarragona. You will visit the Roman Amphitheater - the place where gladiator battles, theatrical performances, and executions took place. You will see the Roman Forum and circus from the beginning of the 1st century, as well as a model of the Roman city of Tarraco. I will tell you about the era of Emperor Augustus, how Roman civilization spread to the territory of Spain, how gladiator battles took place, and much more.
Medieval Alleyways
From the ancient era, we will move to the Spanish Middle Ages - on the narrow streets of the Old Town, ancient Catalan legends will come to life for you. We will visit the Cathedral of Tarragona and stroll through the part of the city where the Jewish Quarter was located, discuss the role of religion in the life of medieval Catalan society, local holidays, and the city's patron saints.
Culture and Traditions of Modern Tarragona
After the historical excursion, we will step outside the Roman walls and walk through the modern districts. Along the main street of the city, Nova Rambla, you will reach the 'Balcony of the Mediterranean,' the city's postcard view. This viewing platform offers a stunning view of the sea, the coastal area, and the amphitheater. Here we will talk about the modern traditions of Catalonia - its flags, 'living towers,' and castellers, Catalan customs, and, of course, the region's desire for independence. We can conclude the walk with lunch at one of the local restaurants: enjoy Catalan dishes and a cup of coffee.
