What to Expect
During this trip, we will visit the following Christian sanctuaries:
- The shoes of Saint Spyridon
- The monastery of the healer St. Phocas
- The Church of Cyprian and Justina
- The Church of the Golden Linen Fields of the Virgin Mary
We will discuss the history of these places, their significance for pilgrims worldwide, talk about the history of the local saints, and what beliefs are held on the island.
Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker willingly responds to the prayers of those experiencing financial difficulties, mired in legal disputes, or unable to recover invested or borrowed money. By touching the shoes of Spyridon, you can seek help in resolving financial issues.
The Protomartyr Phocas is an early Christian saint revered as one of the Equal-to-apostles. Her name is mentioned during the tonsure of women into monasticism. The pilgrimage site for those seeking healing on Cyprus is the women's monastery of the Equal-to-apostles Saint Phocas, where there is a healing spring and from where the suffering take away clay that heals skin diseases. But few pilgrims know that the relics of the Protomartyr Phocas, a disciple of the apostle Paul who suffered in the 1st century and was venerated above all female saints in the ancient Church, are still preserved on Cyprus to this day.
Visiting the Church of Saint Cyprian, you will be able to venerate the relics of Cyprian and Justina, submit notes for "Health" and "Repose" and venerate the life-giving icon of Saint Cyprian, painted in 1613 by the iconographer artist David. At your request, the priest will say a prayer for the removal of the evil eye and witchcraft.
The Church of the Golden Linen Fields of the Virgin Mary is the earliest Byzantine church in the capital of Cyprus. It is located in the heart of the old city, behind the Venetian walls, not far from the Famagusta Gate. According to scholars, it was built in the 5th century. To the right of the Royal Gates is perhaps one of the most unique icons of this church - an icon with two images of the Holy Virgin with the Child! Above each holy image is an inscription: on the right - Quick to Hear, on the left - Quick to Answer. It is to this icon that believers go to the Church of Our Lady of Chrysoliniotissa with their woes and sorrows. It is believed that this icon miraculously supports the suffering, attentively listening to each one.
