About this experience
'Italian' Signagi, the capital of the Telavi region, famous monasteries and wines of the region already explored? This is not a reason to close the 'Kakhetia' page. I suggest moving away from the beaten paths and continue exploring the northeast of the country. You will discover unique temples and fortresses, get acquainted with the culture of Georgian Chechens - the Kists. And in the end, visit the wonderful waterfall in the gorge.
What to expect
- Located about forty minutes drive from Tbilisi, on our way through Kakheti, we will encounter the ancient fortress of Ujarma. Since the 4th century, this was a major Kakhetian city that served as the residence of the founder of Tbilisi, Vakhtang Gorgasali. You will learn about its history, see the ruins of different structures, and an ancient temple.
- After that, we will head to the ancient city of Kvetera, founded around the 7th century. Here, I will show you another beautiful and unusual temple.
- Next, I will take you to the Pankisi Gorge, where the Kists live. They are an ethnic group of Chechens who speak the Kistin dialect of the Chechen language. Most of them also speak Georgian quite well. We will visit a local family who will tell us about their way of life, and the hostess will treat us to traditional dishes.
- Finally, we will venture deeper into the gorge, visit the picturesque Khadori waterfall. Our return path will lead us through the scenic Sabaduri forest, stretching along a beautiful lake.
