About this experience
Let's get one thing straight: wine, Bodbe Monastery, and Signagi streets will be on the agenda. It's hard to imagine Kakheti without them. But we've decided to make the route unconventional by including off-the-beaten-path places where you'll feel warm and cozy. We'll visit a private winemaker, stroll around an ancient citadel, bake Kakhetian bread, have lunch in an authentic setting, and return to Tbilisi absolutely delighted.
What to expect
Visit to a winemaker. We depart from Tbilisi along the Kakheti Highway and head to Grandpa Dito's village of Khashmi. The best green grapes for making wonderful wine grow there. We'll chat with the hosts and taste wines with snacks.
Panoramic views. We'll ascend the 10th-century Manavi Fortress, offering an inspiring landscape view. You'll get acquainted with a sample of medieval fortress architecture of the region and learn about one of the centers of the late feudal period of Kakheti.
Bread, cheeses, matsoni. Along the way, we'll stop in the village of Badiauri where you'll not only taste but also bake the local bread 'dedas puri' in a traditional 'tone' oven. Here you'll also try homemade cheeses and, if in season, buffalo milk matsoni.
Bodbe Monastery. We'll visit the legendary abbey where the relics of the most revered saint in Georgia, St. Nino, rest. The enlightener who brought Christianity to our land passed away here in 347 AD.
City of Love. Afterwards, you'll visit the romantic Signagi, stroll through its atmospheric streets, and walk along the fortress wall.
Lunch. Then we'll head to a restaurant overlooking the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus mountain range. Or, by prior arrangement, we'll go for dinner at a Kakhetian family's house.
