About this experience
Spending at least a day in Padua is an opportunity to forget about the hustle and bustle of neighboring Venice and leisurely stroll along the arched streets and medieval squares, explore beautiful ancient basilicas, and learn about the history of the city where Nicolaus Copernicus and Torquato Tasso received their education. You will hear about the main patron of Padua - Saint Anthony, learn about the public life of Paduans on Prato della Valle, and visit the historic cafe of the city, a favorite place of the locals.
What to Expect
Meadow without grass
We will start the tour at Prato della Valle - one of the largest squares in Europe. We will walk along the canal adorned with a double ring of statues of famous Paduans and visit the Renaissance-style Basilica of Saint Justine. You will learn why this square is called 'meadow without grass' and discover what the city is like now and what historical events are associated with this place.
Saint without a name
From Prato della Valle, we will move to the Basilica of Saint Anthony - the main architectural ornament of the city. Paduans usually simply call their patron Saint. You will hear a story about his life, about the history and architecture of the basilica, and also see the famous statue of the condottiere Gattamelata by Donatello. You will learn how staying in Padua can momentarily transport you to the Vatican.
Cafe without doors
Constructed in neoclassical style with Gothic elements, Pedrocchi Cafe is the most beautiful and therefore the most popular establishment in Padua. Until 1916, it operated 24/7, hence it was called 'cafe without doors'. Leading Paduan architects and decorators decorated the cafe halls in Greek, Roman, Pompeian styles. The cafe remains the main meeting, dating, and relaxation place for local residents and tourists.
And other treasures
The tour will continue in the ancient courtyard of the University of Padua, where you will learn why it is called the 'Palace of the Bull'. You will pass through three squares that form the historic center of Padua and see the unique building Palazzo della Ragione - the meeting hall of the medieval city court, as well as the inconspicuous Rope Arch, stand in the 'corner of lies' - of course, I will tell you how these names originated. Then we will approach the Clock Tower with ancient astronomical clocks - you will understand how they function and what's 'off' about them.
Why did Jews seek to settle in Padua? How did the word 'ghetto' originate? Who are the Veneti people? How is the history of Padua connected to Troy? What is Zairo? Come on my tour, and we will talk about all of this and much more!
