What to Expect
Masterpieces of Titian and the beloved Fondamenta Nove promenade
We will visit the church of Santa Maria Assunta. I will show you the unusual decoration of the church, made of white and green marble with azure inclusions. You will see the great works of Titian and Tintoretto, some of the most famous Italian painters. Then we will walk to the beautiful Fondamenta Nove promenade, where the poet Brodsky loved to stroll, and reach the amazing square of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, which is rightfully considered the second most beautiful square in Venice after Piazza San Marco.
Basilica of Santi Giovanni and Scuola of San Marco: history and architecture
We will visit the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, one of the largest and most significant churches in Venice, where 27 Doges and other famous Venetian figures are buried. I will tell you who the Doges were and how their lives unfolded, and also show you the greatest works of art that the Basilica holds within its ancient walls. You will see magnificent altars, luxurious funerary monuments, and outstanding sculptures. Just a few steps from the Cathedral of Santi Giovanni is the magnificent example of Renaissance architecture, the Scuola of San Marco. I will explain what a scuola is and why the image of the Scuola of San Marco is included in art history textbooks.
On the way, I will show you traditional bars and osterias and recommend you my favorites. We will stop by one of them to taste local drinks and snacks.
