About this experience
On a walk through the center, you will not only be amazed by the Gothic beauty and breathtaking panoramic views, but also learn about Ottawa's unconventional path, delve into the intricacies of Canada's political structure, and explore historical residences. I will also share about important scientific discoveries, the oldest canal in North America, and city sculptural compositions.
Note: the tour starts and ends in Montreal.
What to Expect
The Intriguing History of Ottawa
You will learn how a rough settlement lost in the forests of canal builders rose to become the capital city in 30 years. Why Ottawa was chosen as the center of Canada's governmental power over other strong candidates like Montreal and Toronto. I will also talk about the origin of the city's name, the majestic entrance to the Rideau Canal (a UNESCO monument) - about its creator who never even received a simple 'thank you' for his titanic work, and the original locks still manually operated. In winter, you will see the canal turn into an almost 8 km long skating rink and become the most popular spot in Ottawa.
Parliament Hill: The Holy Grail of Canada's Capital
Here I will introduce you not only to the impressive Gothic buildings but also help you understand the country's political system. You will hear about the roles of the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and the Head of State.
Monuments and Sculptures Worth Noting
Near the memorials, we will talk about Canada's participation in wars on other continents and with its southern neighbor - the USA. We will not overlook the National Gallery of Canada, where the largest collection of works by indigenous peoples and Canadian artists is kept. Near the building, you will see bright urban sculptures such as Maman (Spider). And the sculptural composition 'Women Are Persons Too!' will illustrate the story of Canadian women's fight for their rights.
Innovations and Scientific Achievements
Next to the National Research Council of Canada, you will learn about advanced developments achieved in local laboratories, such as synthetic insulin; a vaccine against meningitis for children; a new technology of ultra-thin film for banknotes, used in many countries worldwide; 3D imaging technology used to scan the original Mona Lisa painting; biofuel from oilseed crops; a device for generating laser beams and measuring processes happening inside atoms and molecules in one quadrillionth of a second (a number with 18 zeros), and much more!
Additionally, our program includes:
Beautiful embassy buildings and government residences, the Royal Mint, the buildings of the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the historic Chateau Laurier Hotel. The former Union Station building, temporarily housing the Senate, and one of Canada's oldest and largest markets - ByWard. Also, a walk on Green Island and the Rideau Falls.
