About this experience
The largest metropolitan area in Canada, located on the banks of one of the Great Lakes, is among the top ten best cities in the world for comfortable living. Therefore, a distinctive feature of vibrant and diverse Toronto is its ethnic composition. During this introductory walk, you will learn how millions of people from different countries live here, how a former village managed to reach such a level, what the city is proud of in terms of landmarks, what makes its history interesting, and which places you should definitely visit to experience the unique Toronto atmosphere.
What to expect
Old Toronto: where it all began
The tour will start at the Main Square, where you will hear about the emergence of Toronto and its predecessor York, the first European settlers, and relationships with the indigenous population. The name of the city, which translates from the Huron language as 'meeting place,' will be a reason to talk about its multiracial residents. You will learn how Toronto became the country's largest metropolitan area, a business and scientific center of global significance, and how modern innovations mix with traditional Canadian style. I will tell you about the analogue of Times Square in the oldest shopping center, and then you will walk along Yonge Street, which was once listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest street in the world. You will hear about the 60-80s development stage when Toronto saw its first skyscrapers, see the famous 'Flatiron Building,' and the largest fountain with 27 dogs at Berczy Park Square. Near St. Lawrence Market, we will discuss why it is also considered a landmark and linger at St. James Cathedral, where you will learn about the oldest communities and the religious side of local life.
Skyscrapers, hockey, and the city's atmosphere
In the business center, you will see the building of the first bank and stock exchange, modern financial skyscrapers, Union Station, and the Scotia Bank Center. You will find it interesting to learn about the underground city in Toronto, where everything is set up so that people can move from home to work without even wearing winter clothes. Near the Hockey Hall of Fame, we will talk about the national sport without which Canadians cannot imagine themselves. You will feel the spirit and atmosphere in Harbourfront neighborhood, a popular place for city residents, where concerts and festivals are held, circus performers and street actors perform. Breathing in the fresh breeze of Lake Ontario, you will head towards the famous brewery and historic railway station. Then you will visit the tallest tower in the world, the CN Tower, learn about the architectural principles of other grand structures, and the concepts of modern sculptures in Toronto.
Additional options (extended program)
If you want to explore the city in more detail, I will accompany you on a walk through the Distillery District historic area, which in the 19th century was one of the largest whiskey producers in North America (today you will find artistic galleries, designer boutiques, bars, and restaurants here). In the Graffiti Alley, I will introduce you to street art, we will walk through the Chinatown and colorful Kensington Market. You can also visit the student town of University of Toronto, where we will talk about the local education system—one of the best in the world.
✔ In the end, you will not only get acquainted with the city's main attractions but also learn how to navigate in it, discover other interesting places to visit during your trip, find the best restaurants, and buy authentic Canadian souvenirs.
