About this experience
On a stroll through the center, you will not only be amazed by the Gothic beauty and stunning panoramic views, but also learn about Ottawa's unconventional path, discover the intricacies of Canada's political system, and explore historical residences. I will also tell you about important scientific discoveries, the oldest canal in North America, and urban sculptural compositions.
What to Expect
Fascinating History of Ottawa
You will learn how a poorly organized village of canal builders, lost in the forests, rose to the status of the country's capital in just 30 years. Why Ottawa was chosen as the center of Canada's government over stronger candidates like Montreal and Toronto. I will also share the city's origin story and near the majestic entrance to the Rideau Canal (a UNESCO site) - about its creator, who didn't even receive a simple 'thank you' for his titanic work, and the original locks that are still manually operated to this day. In winter, you will see how the canal turns into an almost 8 km long skating rink and becomes the most popular spot in Ottawa.
Parliament Hill: the Holiest of Holies of Canada's Capital
Here I will introduce you not only to impressive Gothic buildings, but also help you understand the country's political structure. You will learn about the roles of the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and the Head of State.
Monuments and Sculptures Worthy of Attention
Near the memorials, we will talk about Canada's involvement in wars on other continents and with its southern neighbor - the USA. We will not overlook the National Gallery of Canada, where the largest collection of works by indigenous peoples and Canadian artists is kept. Near the building, you will see such vibrant urban sculptures as Maman (Spider). And the sculptural composition 'Women Are Persons Too!' will illustrate the story of Canadian women's struggle for their rights.
Innovations and Scientific Achievements
Next to the National Research Council of Canada, you will learn about advanced developments achieved in local laboratories, such as synthetic insulin; a vaccine against meningitis for children; a new technology for ultra-thin film for banknotes, used in many countries around the world; 3D imaging technology used to scan the original Mona Lisa painting; biofuel from oilseed crops; a device for generating laser beams and measuring processes inside atoms and molecules within one quintillionth of a second (a number with 18 zeros), and much more!
Additionally, our program includes:
Beautiful embassy buildings and government residences, the Royal Mint, the Department of Foreign Affairs building, and the historic Chateau Laurier hotel. The former Union Station, temporarily home to the Senate, and one of Canada's oldest and largest markets - ByWard. Also, a walk on Green Island and the Rideau Falls.
