About this experience
If you want to see Italy at its best, taste the world-famous local wine, admire the architecture and historical monuments, then Orvieto is the perfect city for such a trip.
This is a completely unique ancient town, standing on a high tuff hill, riddled with underground passages and secret caves. Orvieto is located an hour's drive from Rome and is literally immersed in greenery. Vineyards, magnificent nature, and harmony - these are the first impressions that most tourists get from this place. Orvieto holds many mysteries and secrets. It seems that it has not changed at all since the Middle Ages, and all world processes and events are far from this realm of nature and kingdom of silence.
What to expect
Getting to know Orvieto
Riding the funicular, you will enter the ancient part of the city and immediately immerse yourself in the events that have taken place here over many centuries. You will see the ruins of the ancient Etruscan temple Belvedere, visit the well of Saint Patrick, the city fortress, and admire the magnificent Umbrian landscapes. I will show you the Orvieto Cathedral - one of the masterpieces of Italian Gothic architecture, the keeper of a sacred relic, and the papal palaces, which have now become museums preserving the ancient history of the city. You will be able to climb the Del Moro tower and overlook the city from a height of 47 meters, from there you will see the impregnable and powerful Captain of the People Palace. In addition, Orvieto has ancient churches with magnificent frescoes of the Umbrian school of painting from the 12th-14th centuries, as well as shops of craftsmen, for which the city has been famous in all centuries, and traditional Italian courtyards with laundry hanging out for drying available in the assortment.
Local wine - the symbol of the city
Another important symbol of the city, known worldwide, is the white dry wine Orvieto Classico. According to many connoisseurs, Orvieto is the homeland of white wines. If you want to treat your family and friends, bring them a bottle of this famous wine. I can organize a wine tasting in one of the city's wine bars or even at one of the producers, and you will visit the wine cellars, where you will learn about the process of making this wonderful drink.
National cuisine
You will also have the opportunity to try the traditional cuisine of Umbria - you will be offered exquisite dishes in one of the cozy typical family restaurants on the narrow streets of the city - you can choose one of them on the way or, based on your preferences, I can suggest and discuss various options with you. One of them, usually leaving our guests delighted, is the underground labyrinth of the Etruscan civilization, found and skillfully restored by a family of confectioners who discovered it by chance right under their confectionery. They now store their wine there, as well as made it a kind of museum attraction that can be visited with a short and not tiring tour. Everything ends with a small tasting of local wines with salty and sweet snacks prepared by the hosts, or lunch with white, red, and dessert wines. By the way, the owner, a magnificent master of his craft, was invited as a chef for the birthday of the President of Kazakhstan. Visiting this place is not included in the main part of the tour, but upon your request, it can be added to the program. The cost of lunch with a tour and three wines is 30 euros per person, only a tour with a tasting of three wines - 15 euros.
In general, it is worth staying in Orvieto for at least a couple of days to get to know the city and its attractions at a leisurely pace, taste Umbrian cuisine, sample local wines, and also visit the magnificent dying city of Civita di Bagnoregio and the largest volcanic lake in Europe, Bolsena, in the neighboring Lazio region. If you are interested in a two or more days option, write to me and we will develop a suitable itinerary together.
