About this experience
Just over an hour by train from Rome, and you are in the picturesque region of Umbria, where Italians love to relax. We will explore one of its most beautiful cities - Orvieto. We will stroll through the ancient streets and visit the famous Cathedral. We will also visit the neighboring village of Civita di Bagnoregio: mysterious and fantastically beautiful.
What to expect
Orvieto through the ages
You will learn how in the Middle Ages Orvieto turned into a powerful city-state and the residence of the Roman popes. And why over time it became a quiet cozy place, far from the turmoil of big capitals. Together we will explore the unusual well of Saint Patrick and the Cathedral, adorned with golden mosaics and lace made of stone. We will visit its chapels and see the famous frescoes. And then through the labyrinth of narrow streets we will reach the edge of the city to see stunning views of the hills of Umbria.
The ghost town of Civita di Bagnoregio
On the way to Civita, we will admire vineyards and olive groves. We will also stop at a viewpoint with a magnificent view of Orvieto. In the 18th century, English travelers described it as 'the most beautiful in Europe'. Upon reaching the village, we will cross the famous bridge and enter the Old Town, where nothing has changed for over 400 years. We will stroll through its winding streets and talk about why almost no one lives there.
