About this experience
This journey is for those who want to take a break from the grandeur of Rome and enjoy harmonious landscapes while learning a lot about Italy. Our program includes legends and mysteries of the frozen city of Civita, a story about a miracle and a medieval castle in ancient Bolsena, harmonious views of valleys and a volcanic lake, as well as delicious discoveries.
What to Expect
Civita di Bagnoregio - Castle Town
This place resembles the nest of a giant bird, perched on top of a hill. Today, Civita is home to no more than 20 people! The city, built by the Etruscans 2500 years ago, is connected to modernity only by a pedestrian bridge. From there, you will enjoy enchanting views of green valleys and 'lunar' badlands. I will explain what this means and why the city is called dying. We will talk about the patron saint of Civita, visit the stone church of St. Donatus, and simply stroll through the streets and alleys.
Bolsena - Lake and City of a Miracle
You will encounter the largest volcanic water reservoir in Europe and the eponymous town on its shore. Monuments in the vicinity of Bolsena will help you imagine the golden age of Roman aristocratic dynasties and the times of the rule of many popes. Exploring the city, you will certainly hear about the miracle that occurred here in the 13th century. Since then, Bolsena has been hosting the colorful Corpus Domini festival annually - I will tell you about it and show you the church where the miracle took place. In addition, we will descend into the catacombs with the burials of the first Christians and visit the Monaldeschi Castle.
Finally, get ready for gastronomic discoveries (you are in Italy after all!). We will visit a local cuisine restaurant with a wide selection of fish dishes: carps, pikes, tenches, and eels live in Lake Bolsena, which were enjoyed by Pope Martin IV, for which Dante placed him in purgatory in the 'Divine Comedy'.
