About this experience
Ohrid will be remembered by its cozy winding streets, houses with red tiled roofs, Byzantine churches, and ancient fortress on the hilltop. I will tell you how its history unfolded and what it lives by today. I will also show you the nearby famous Monastery of St. Naum.
What to expect
Ohrid and surroundings
You will stroll through charming medieval streets and visit the amphitheater where gladiatorial battles once took place. You will climb the fortress built by Tsar Samuel and walk along the cliff-side pathways along Lake Ohrid. Then we will drive to the Monastery of St. Naum - one of the oldest and most revered spiritual abodes in Macedonia. We will delve into its rich history and admire the frescoes covering the walls and ceilings of the church.
Interesting facts
I will reveal how Ohrid became the local Jerusalem, why it is called the 'soul of the Balkans,' and what connection Tsar Samuel has to it. I will decipher its unusual name and tell you about the city's 'business cards': Byzantine churches, pearls, and trout. You will also learn about Ohrid's ties to Cyril and Methodius, Lake Baikal, and Slavic writing.
