About this experience
Nimes is a city seldom visited by Russian tourists. Yet, this city holds a lot of interesting secrets and has a special charm due to the blend of three Mediterranean cultures. Nimes is the only city in France where a majority of ancient Roman architectural monuments have survived to this day. This is where Levi Strauss sewed the first classic jeans. Just 15 km away from the city, you can find the source of the famous mineral water Perrier. Come and I will gladly introduce you to the wonderful Nimes!
What to expect
Ancient history of Nimes
To come to the city and not see the arena is unthinkable! You will visit the Amphitheater, hear the history of the Gallic period of Nimes and fully immerse yourself in the ancient atmosphere by attending an event reconstructing the events of the time of Emperor Augustus, where you will see gladiator battles and the gathering of Roman troops, all inside the Amphitheater built in 60 AD.
Local cuisine and the charm of provincial French markets
We will stroll through local markets where fresh seafood (Nimes is located 30 km from the sea), olives, meat delicacies, and a variety of cheeses are sold. I will also introduce you to traditional Languedoc cuisine with its unique blend of flavors and aromas, characteristic only of this region. You will definitely forget all the stereotypes about the French breakfast with croissants.
Interesting facts about Nimes
You will learn about one of Nostradamus' predictions that came true regarding the city, which, by the way, visited these lands and made his prophecies in one of the towers. I will tell you about the famous denim fabric (translated from French as 'fabric from Nimes'), where this material was invented, and Levi Strauss sewed the first classic jeans here. If desired, we can visit the thematic museum. We will definitely take a walk in the old town center through the Jardins de la Fontaine, where you will hear an interesting story about this amazing park that blossomed under Louis XIV.
Additional options
As an addition to the program, we can visit the source 15 km from Nimes, which was bought by the local doctor Louis Perrier in 1903 and started selling mineral water under the Perrier brand, known for its healing properties. We can also see the preserved ancient Roman aqueduct 47 meters high on the way, which was once erected to supply the city with water.
Furthermore, I will gladly show you shops to buy souvenirs and local delicacies at reasonable prices, stroll through shopping streets, and answer any questions you may have about life in Nimes.
