About this experience
Many Russian tourists overlook Lille. And it's a big mistake! This city will charm you at first sight, colorful and diverse, modern and ancient, dynamic yet with a 'human' rhythm of life. You will see how well comfort and charm of the old town with narrow streets blend here with modern urban infrastructure. Lille is the northern capital of France, where French and Flemish cultures merge with Flemish business acumen and French art of living beautifully.
What to expect
- We will start with the central square of Lille - Grand Place, recognized as the second most beautiful in France.
- Then we will visit the flea market, located in the courtyard of the Old Stock Exchange, an amazingly beautiful 17th-century building in the Flemish Renaissance style, built at a time when Lille was not yet French.
- Our pleasant leisurely walk will continue through the narrow streets of Old Lille. Here you can admire the bright traditional houses, one of which was inhabited by Charles Ogier de Batz de Castelmore, better known to us as the Count of d'Artagnan.
- We will not overlook the Lille Cathedral - Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille, construction of which began in the 19th century, paused due to lack of funds, and only completed in our days. We will discuss with you how ingenious architect Peter Rice's decision was to erect an unusual modern facade for this temple, which emphasizes the essence of Lille - a harmonious combination of past and present, ancient and modern.
- We won't be bored, we will walk along the shortest street in Lille, which was previously located on the territory of a women's monastery, where I will share urban legends and myths with you about ghosts and demons and the exorcism procedure that often took place within the walls of this monastery.
- The final chord will be a bird's-eye view of the city, from the 104-meter tower of the City Hall, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And if you have a sweet tooth, you must try traditional waffles, the recipe of which has not changed for centuries, or other incredibly tasty treats at the 'Mert' tea room and confectionery, opened in the 18th century.
