About this experience
Almaty is like a layered cake made of ancient wooden houses, Soviet architecture, and graffiti. On this walk, you will try it all! You will see ancient buildings that have survived natural disasters, hear epic Almaty stories, and take photos against the backdrop of bright street art. You will laugh at local jokes and understand how locals live.
What to expect
Almaty's Past: Layer by Layer
Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, Ascension Cathedral, Opera and Ballet Theatre - the list of sights you will see on the walk can go on and on. But what's more interesting is what is hidden behind them! Let's get to the essence of the city gradually:
- Let's start with the apple filling: you'll find out why the city was named after an apple.
- We will examine in detail the lemon-yellow ancient cathedral. What feature saved it from demolition during the Soviet era? Let's find out!
- You will be amazed to learn how Kazakh chocolate is connected to Moscow, and you will also hear about famous people who lived in our sunny city. Among them is a world-famous Russian ballerina who came to Almaty for love and then shined on the city's stage.
- We will answer why the hard times of the Great Patriotic War turned into a cultural flourishing for the city.
And Bright Modernity!
One cannot live on the past alone, so as a spice we will add a bit of the present:
- We will admire Almaty's street art.
- In autumn and winter, we will visit a cafe to make the difficult choice between 17 types of fragrant croissants, and in summer we will cool off with a scoop of ice cream - strawberry, caramel, or even Aperol flavored.
- For the 'dessert', we will visit the gastronomic heart of Almaty - the Green Bazaar. We will try Kazakh meat delicacies and nomadic sweets. You can take them as gifts for your loved ones, as they can be stored for a long time even without a refrigerator.
