About this experience
We will walk through the main streets of the former capital, visit the magnificent wooden cathedral, the grand bath complex, and also take a peek at the ancient eastern market. You will immerse yourself in the charm and color of the southern capital, learn about prominent figures of the republic and key historical events, see the city-garden through the eyes of the locals, and learn to navigate in it.
What to Expect
New-Old City
We will meet at the 28 Panfilov Park, in the center of the 'Old City', which in the 19th century was still called the new one. You will see the memorial of glory and eternal flame, the exquisite wooden Ascension Cathedral, formerly known as the Turkestan Sophia, and the first independent theater of Kazakhstan. We will walk along the main alley of the park, under the shade of Tien Shan spruces, and talk about its fate and transformations.
Kazakh Aristocracy
Leaving the memorial reserve, we will find ourselves in the historical 'Golden Square' of the city, near the famous baths 'Arasan'. The complex includes Eastern, Russian, and Finnish baths, a water treatment facility, a shower pavilion, and a children's department. You will hear a story about the first pre-revolutionary urban baths, about the construction of 'Arasan' and its architecture during the 'Kunaev' period. After examining the building, we will head to Panfilov Street - a local Arbat, one of the key places not only in Almaty but also in the city of Verny. Along the street, there are two large shopping centers - TSUM and Passage, two cinemas, numerous bookstores, art galleries, theaters, and cozy cafes. You will meet dancers and musicians, be amazed by magicians and artists, and, if you're lucky, you will encounter the annual contemporary art festival.
Eastern Bazaar and Merchants
The final point of our tour will be the 'Green Bazaar' - one of the oldest markets in Kazakhstan. You will learn the history of the 'Guest Yard and its merchants', which was located here before the earthquake, hear about its Turkestan grace and significance for the city's development. We will talk about the market's operation during the war and the Soviet style of constructivism, after which you can walk among the stalls and try our 'Almaty Aport'.
