About this experience
Climbing Mount Sinai and visiting St. Catherine's Monastery are the main reasons to visit the sacred sites of Egypt, listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. What is the monastery famous for and what role did it play in the lives of Christians? What is the Burning Bush and why do tourists flock here to see it? Discover all this and more on our tour!
What to Expect
Mount Sinai
According to biblical texts, this is where God appeared to Moses and gave him the 10 Commandments. There are two paths to the summit: the gentle, tourist path, and the more challenging path chosen by the faithful. Our ascent will take place on the 'camel' path, which is more gradual but longer. The group will be accompanied by a local resident - a Bedouin guide.
Along the three-hour route, you will find benches for rest, tents with sweets and drinks, and restrooms. Most of the way can be covered by camel for an additional fee ($15). The last 750 steps of the 'monk's staircase' are all ascended on foot. After witnessing the sunrise at the summit, you can visit the cave where, according to the Bible, Moses hid for 40 days and nights.
Christian History
Your journey through the sacred sites of Sinai will continue with a visit to St. Catherine's Monastery, located at the foot of Mount Sinai. You will learn about the history of the monastery: from the monastic community that formed around the Burning Bush to the impregnable fortress that has never been destroyed. On the monastery grounds, you will see Moses' well and the Burning Bush bush, and if you wish, you can light candles in the Basilica of the Transfiguration.
