I will introduce you to the culture and history of ancient Azerbaijan. You will see the amazing architectural mausoleum of Sheikh Diriy Baba and find stunning copper products in the village of Lahij. Learn about Eastern medieval architecture, ancient traditions and crafts, and enjoy picturesque natural views.
What to expect
Mausoleum in the rocks
The mausoleum building, seemingly floating in the rocks, is a true masterpiece of the Shirvan architectural school. I will tell you about the construction of this 15th-century monument and the legendary Sheikh Diriy Baba, as well as explain the local sacrificial offerings and what they ask the saint for. You will explore the interior of the mausoleum and admire the panoramic view from the roof.
Crafts center
The cobblestone streets and squares of Lahij will transport you to the Middle Ages. We will stroll among two-story houses made of light gray river stone and talk about the village's population, see ancient mosques and craftsmen's shops. I will share an ancient legend about a Persian Shah that explains the residents' skillful metalworking with iron and copper. At the local history museum, you will get acquainted with the region's culture and traditions. Learn about the unique earthquake-resistant construction technology developed and hear many stories about the locals. Finally, we will walk across the suspension bridge over the Girdimanchay River and get an adrenaline rush.
