About this experience
Visiting Tunisia and not reaching the Sahara is nonsense! During the trip through the great desert, you will feel like Bedouins, watching the sunset among the sand dunes, visit the tribe of troglodytes, visit the beautiful salt lake Chott el Jerid, learn about the history of the ancient amphitheater, and witness a mystical phenomenon on the Rommel Road.
What to expect
- Depart to the Sahara deep in the night to reach the Atlas Mountains by morning. Our path will lead us along the serpentines of the Rommel Road, where you will witness a unique mystical phenomenon: a car with the engine off driving into a mountain right before your eyes.
- Arrive at the Tamerza Oasis, take a stroll through it, and find yourself in a picturesque canyon. It is called "Golden" for a reason: it shines in the sunlight!
- Walk the path of Indiana Jones and reach the lower oasis, to a small waterfall.
- Then we will head to another canyon—Mides. It is located right on the border with Algeria and is famous from many movies. I will tell you about some of them.
- After walking on the viewing platforms, we will head to the next oasis. You will try the "Berber pizza" and traditional tea, swim, and see reptiles (for example, the horned snake that lives in an aquarium with the locals).
- After lunch and a short break, we will drive to the salt lake Chott El Jerid. In the summer, the salt flat resembles a huge field as the water recedes, but in the winter, it is a full-fledged lake with pink water.
- Next, we will head to the city of Douz, also known as the "Gateway to the Sahara." We will explore its old part and go to the camels. You will ride these gentle animals and feel like Bedouins, watching the sunset of the blazing sun in the desert. Optionally, you can rent a quad bike and ride on the sand dunes.
- The next stop on the route is a hotel (Dar Khalif or Maison du voyageur). Here, you will enjoy a hearty dinner and a good night's sleep. Rest up!
- We will start the second day with a desert sunrise. Then we will visit troglodytes in the city of Matmata, where houses are dug underground, some even in the mountains. We will observe the lifestyle of the locals and have breakfast like troglodytes.
- We will make a stop in the city of Médenine, have lunch, take a walk along the embankment, and admire the sculptures of local craftsmen.
- Now our path leads to El Djem—to the famous amphitheater. We will descend under the arena, climb the walls, and sit in the stands like a noble Roman and a commoner. You will learn how the amphitheater was built and how it managed to be preserved until our days. Then we will get in the car and drive back to your hotel.
