About this experience
The history of Rhodes is an ancient manuscript filled with events. One of the bright chapters in the island's destiny was the arrival of the knights of the Order of Malta. As a licensed guide, I will introduce you to the heritage of this era, tell you about the Hospitallers, battles, order's 'tongues', and how the medieval Europe owes to the Eastern world.
What to Expect
Defense of Faith
We will stroll through the quarters of the Old Town where fragments of different epochs intertwine. The fortress walls will reveal secrets of knightly fortifications, while the mosaic, sculpture, and architecture of the monumental Palace of the Grand Masters will speak of the culture of Rhodes at that time. On the Knights Street, the history of the Crusades will unfold before you: I will answer questions about why the knights were monks, what lifestyle they led, and who they called the Grand Master.
Aid to the Poor and Afflicted
Next, we will visit a 15th-century knights' hospital built in the style of a caravanserai. You will learn what was housed in the building and hear about the complex operations carried out in the Middle Ages. I will explain why hospital work became the main activity of the Order of St. John and how military men became medics. And then we will enter the knights' church.
Italian Rhodes
At the end of the tour, we will stop at the city's port. You will travel back to the era of Alexander the Great and try to unravel the mystery of the Colossus of Rhodes — learn the history of its creation, as well as where it actually was located and what it looked like.
P.S. For travelers arriving at the port of Rhodes, the program also includes a visit to the Jewish quarter, where you will see the rabbinic school, the Square of Jewish Martyrs, the oldest synagogue in Greece, and the Church of St. Panteleimon founded by the Crusader Knights.
