About this experience
Leaving Rhodes without exploring its medieval history in the eponymous city means missing out on many interesting facts, the chance to walk along the fortress moat, and see the walls that have witnessed sieges. Macedonia, the Roman Empire, Turkey - Rhodes changed its 'owners' and carefully preserved the memory of each historical milestone. You will learn about them on my tour.
What to Expect
Rhodes' Path to Independence
You will hear the story of the city's foundation, which was under the influence of Macedonia, Rome, and Turkey at different times. You will learn about many events related to the Venetian period and the era when Rhodes was ruled by the Order of the Knights of Saint John. In other words, I will tell you about the island's rocky road to independence. You will be able to walk along the moat surrounding the fortress-city and imagine events of past years thanks to my stories.
Architecture and Ancient Monuments of the City
The tour begins in Mandraki - on the main promenade of the island near the columns with sculptures of a deer and a doe. Here, I will tell you why these animals became symbols of Rhodes and the history of the Colossus of Rhodes - because it stood here over 2,000 years ago. You will stroll along the promenade past the Venetian fountain and the city's main church, built according to the plans of the cathedral of the Ionian Knights, along a series of impressive administrative buildings from the Italian period, to reach the walls of the medieval fortress city. And then you will see the Palace of the Grand Masters, walk down Knight Street, wander through the Jewish Quarter, look at Hippocrates Square with a fountain and the Mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent.
If desired, you can visit the Archaeological Museum and the Palace of the Grand Masters.
