"Knight in the Tiger's Skin": literary walk around Batumi
About this experience
For Georgians, Shota Rustaveli is what Pushkin is for Russians. The lines of his famous poem have turned into proverbs, and the names of the heroes are given to sons. And if you want to better understand Georgian culture, you can't do it without 'Knight in the Tiger's Skin'. We will talk about the tangled fate of the original text, about the hidden meanings between the lines, and take a walk around the city or its surroundings - and I will show you Batumi through the eyes of a local.
What to expect
"This is the best love poem ever created in Europe, a rainbow of love, a fiery bridge, connecting heaven and earth"
Konstantin Balmont
"Evil defeated, good will prevail boundlessly in this world"
Shota Rustaveli
Introduction to the 'Knight in the Tiger's Skin'
For world culture, the emergence of this work was akin to a grand archaeological discovery. Many stanzas of the poem have become proverbs, and the names of the heroes (Tinatin, Avtandil, Tariel) are carried by representatives of not one Georgian generation. So, if you really want to understand Georgian culture, I invite you to get closer acquainted with the work that has had such an influence on it.
On the excursion, I will talk about the tangled fate of the original manuscript of the poem and the most famous translations. We will discuss the intricate twists of the plot, hidden meanings, and the amazing humanistic strength of its content. You will understand how the poem became the 'Georgian Bible' and influenced national identity, and also - what lessons representatives of other nations can draw from it.
Getting to know Batumi
We will talk a lot, so the excursion is not strictly tied to the city streets. But I know them well :) Therefore, you can choose one of the route options.
- Promenade along Batumi Boulevard and a walk through the streets and cozy courtyards of the Old Town. I will show you the most atmospheric places, tell you about the city's history and the residents of Batumi, suggest where to find the best coffee, khinkali, and khachapuri in the Adjarian style (these are three different places).
- Walk along the hills above Batumi with panoramic views of the sea and the city. A romantic walk through citrus orchards and hills covered with Colchis forest. You will be treated to a brief excursion into botany and a story about the life and traditions of mountainous Adjara.
- Relaxing time in one or two city cafes (recommended in case of hot or rainy weather). If you choose this option, you will be introduced to Georgian wine and gastronomic culture: traditions of feasting, winemaking process, and the differences between the cuisines of different regions.
