Multifaceted Batumi
About this experience
Get ready to discover the most interesting sides of Batumi and immerse yourself in its fate and everyday life. Cathedrals and churches, an Italian-style square, a monument to the Georgian alphabet, the sculpture of the lovers 'Ali and Nino,' and the statue of Medea - you will see the iconic places of the city, delve into its history, and feel the character of the local residents. The decorations of Batumi and my narrative, full of intriguing facts and urban legends, will make you fall in love with Adjara and its hospitable capital.
What to Expect
Feel the multi-confessionality of Batumi
The status of a duty-free port two centuries ago attracted foreigners to Batumi, hence the city has many religious buildings. I will show you the constructions of different faiths and tell you their 'biographies.' You will admire the unusual Armenian church of Saint Nicholas and understand why it was built in a non-classical style. You will appreciate the interiors of the synagogue and the Gothic Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God. You will visit the active Ahmed Pasha Orta Jami Mosque and learn about its connection to Adjara’s history. You will be touched by the tragic fate of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the foundation of which was laid by the imperial family. We will discuss how the intertwining of cultures has influenced the customs of the townspeople and what they themselves think about it.
Touch the history of the city and meet its inhabitants
Batumi's squares - Piazza, Theatre, and Europe Square - will definitely be included in our route. On the first one, you will 'step into' sunny Italy without leaving the borders of Georgia! I will explain why Piazza Square was built in such a style and will lead you to Theatre Square, where another small reminder of this country awaits you - the Neptune Fountain. You will find out what distinguishes it from its Italian counterpart and take colorful photos. At Europe Square, while examining the statue of Medea, you will hear the legend of the daughter of King Aeëtes and see a tower with astronomical clocks. At the stone-cross 'hichkar', I will reveal one of the saddest pages in Adjara's fate, and at the Batumi Boulevard, you will observe the tower of the Georgian alphabet, the park of wonders, and the lighthouse. I will share memories of Mandelstam, Yesenin, Paustovsky, and Babel about the city with you, and then we will move to the present - discuss the habits and customs of Batumi residents and taste Georgian wines and chacha in a restaurant.
