What to Expect
"Postcards" of the New Town
This district appeared on the map of Kaunas after Napoleon's campaign to Moscow in 1812. You will walk along its central artery - Laisves Avenue, almost 2 km long. You will hear how Kovno became the Lithuanian capital Kaunas, what difficulties it faced throughout history, and how it overcame them. I will show you all the iconic buildings of the New Town: officers' palaces and Pajangos, the Philharmonic, the Piano Centre, former savings banks, and the Romuva cinema. And also - the first modernist building and the Bank of Lithuania, the most expensive construction of the interwar period.
Kaunas - History and Architecture
On Donelaitis and Putvinskis streets, you will see the townspeople's homes in the functional style. You will learn about the differences between modernism, functionalism, constructivism, and rationalism. Explore the monument to Grand Duke Vytautas, Unity Square, and the complex of military museums.
