About this experience
Tbilisi has long been renowned as a multicultural city, where various communities have left their mark on its life and vibrant appearance. During the meeting, we will talk about the lesser-known but vivid Jewish heritage of the capital. You will trace the history of three local diasporas and their relationships with Georgians. Visit synagogues, the ethnographic museum, and take a fresh look at the 18-19th century buildings from a different angle.
What to Expect
Jewish Communities of Tbilisi
While walking through the historic streets, you will learn about the inception of the first Jewish diasporas here and become familiar with the peculiarities of the three main ones. I will tell you about Georgian and Kurdistan mountain Jews (Lahluhi) and devote special attention to the most numerous subethnic group, formed in Central Europe in the 14th century - the Ashkenazim. You will understand why it was important for each of them to have their own prayer house and visit two synagogues: the Big one - of Akhaltsikhe Jews, and the Small one - Beit Rachel.
Friendship of Two Peoples
It is known that a bright feature of Jewish communities is the ability to maintain a traditional way of life and strictly follow religious prescriptions anywhere in the world. It is also known that not all countries encouraged these aspirations. During the tour, we will discuss how Georgians and Jews managed to build long-standing good relations. Among other things, there will be interesting facts and legends about rabbis who brought the robe of Christ to the lands of Sakartvelo. And at the Museum of History and Ethnography, opened in a former synagogue, you will explore exhibits illustrating the connection between our peoples.
Organizational Details
- Entrance fee to the museum is an additional $2 per person
- A kosher lunch can be arranged at Beit Chabad restaurant upon request
