About this experience
I invite you to explore the colorful Old Shanghai! You will learn how the city transformed from a fishing village into a dynamic metropolis. Admire traditional Chinese architecture, taste local snacks from street vendors, haggle with souvenir sellers, and feed the carp in the pond. And in the Garden of Joy, you will discover the peculiarities of Chinese perception of nature and the surrounding world.
What to Expect
Old Town
This is the heart of Shanghai, its oldest part and the concentration of all things Chinese in an international metropolis. We will meet at the trading quarters on the banks of the Huangpu River near the ancient English embankment. We will stroll through the market rows, visit a Chinese pharmacy, and try street snacks straight from the grill. Then, amidst the loud cries of hawkers and the tunes of bamboo flutes, we will walk under 200-year-old ginkgo trees and see the revered City God Temple of Shanghai.
Garden of Joy
We will visit a traditional southern Chinese garden - the result of the work of landscape designers, gardeners, and restorers from the 16th century to the present day. You will see an example of an ideal landscape where every detail matters. Admire the ponds, bridges, exquisite pavilions, and pagodas. Discover the family history connected with the creation of the garden and what happened to it in different historical periods: the rise and fall of Shanghai's elite, popular uprisings and riots.
