About this experience
The Green Tour is a journey through the southern part of Cappadocia. Together we will visit the largest of the region's underground cities - Derinkuyu. You will explore the cells of the rock monastery, walk through the Ihlara Valley canyon, and visit the observation platforms where you can take the best photos of the incredible valleys of Goreme and Pigeon.
What to Expect
Into the 'deep well'
The underground city of Derinkuyu will reveal its secrets to you. We will go through all 8 levels and talk about the residents of the city - from the very first ones, the Hittites, who settled here 4 thousand years ago, to the Christians who hid in caves during persecutions. You will see ancient kitchens, storage rooms, a winery, living rooms, and animal stables. Visit the church and missionary school and be amazed at how developed the infrastructure of the underground city is.
Fantastic Landscapes
In Selime, we will tour the rock monastery: cells, dining rooms, and churches - the result of the long and painstaking work of the monks. You will learn about the difficult fate of the monastery and enjoy the stunning view of the surroundings, which impressed George Lucas so much that he inserted a couple of shots into the 'Star Wars' saga.
Down the River
Descending into the Ihlara Valley, we will take a walk along the Melendiz River, which over millions of years has carved a canyon 150 meters high. The trail will lead to a restaurant where we will be served a lunch of local dishes. After a rest, you will be treated to panoramas of the Pigeon Valley and Goreme, a gallery of volcanic rocks, and a tasting of dried fruits, sweets, and nuts in a farmer's produce shop.
Organizational Details
How the Tour Goes
- In a comfortable minibus
- We will pick you up at your hotel in Goreme, Uchisar, Avanos, Urgup, or Cavusin at 9:30, the tour starts at 10:00
- English-speaking travelers may be in the group. In this case, the guide will speak in two languages onboard.
