About this experience
Let's travel back in time for a day: to when people living in Cappadocia had to build secret cities and hide in caves. We will walk through the underground residential areas of Kaymakli, imagine camels leisurely walking along the caravan route, and enjoy the cosmic cliff landscapes resembling a giant beehive. Along the way, we will also stroll through a picturesque canyon and find Baba Yaga's house.
What to Expect
Descent into the Underground City
In the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel and embark on a day trip. We will start the route with a descent into the underground city of Kaymakli, which goes down more than 100 meters. Early Christians built such shelters to hide from persecutors. Let's transport ourselves to the past and imagine how life was teeming here: we will see rooms where people lived, food storage areas, water supply systems, and ventilation. It's hard to believe that all this was built at the dawn of our era.
Canyon and Caravan Route to the Monastery
Next, we will take a walk through the Ihlara Canyon - descending down and walking a couple of kilometers along a picturesque path along the stream. Along the way, we will see photogenic insta-spots, churches in the rocks, and even Baba Yaga's house. Optionally, we will stop for lunch inside the canyon. After that, we will head to the Selime Monastery - the largest in Cappadocia. But to get inside, we will have to pass through a tunnel - at one time it was part of the caravan route.
Cliffside Village
Finally, we will admire the cosmic panorama of the Ortahisar village. Next to the village square rises the monolith rock of Sivrikaya, resembling a tower. Like a beehive, the rock is crisscrossed with passages and rooms - there is plenty of room for imagination.
