About this experience
I will teach you how to read the paintings of Dutch Golden Age artists and tell you about the lives, clothing, food, and pastimes of the builders and inhabitants of the houses that still surround anyone entering the center of Amsterdam today. It can be difficult to understand the meaning of many artifacts without preparation, but with the right guide, a walk through the museum will bring you much pleasure.
What to expect
The collection of the Rijksmuseum is literally a history in paintings. Almost photorealistic art, like a comic book, illustrates the formation of the Dutch mentality, laying the foundation of modern society. The traits characteristic of the Dutch of the 17th century will be noticed by you in the behavior of today's city dwellers as soon as you leave the museum. And then Amsterdam will become clear and close to you. That is why a visit to the Rijksmuseum is the perfect complement to a city tour.
Since Dutch art of the 17th century is a significant chapter in world culture, it is this period that we will focus our attention on. I will talk about the penetration of realism in painting, we will discuss who, how, and why the art objects - now museum exhibits - were created.
In addition to the most important masterpieces of Rembrandt and Vermeer, we will have plenty to see. The museum houses over a million exhibits. Depending on your interests, I will introduce you to any artistic style, whether it is the Hague School from the late 19th century, the Amsterdam School from the early 20th century, or the De Stijl movement.
