About this experience
This tour is a combination of a gastronomic route through Amsterdam and through the Rijksmuseum. On the way to the 'Night Watch', we will try typical Dutch dishes and snacks and take a coffee break at the museum cafe. You will hear stories about local cuisine, about Dutch paintings of the Golden Age. And also - tables set for dinner, self-satisfied burgers, clients of Rembrandt, Hals, and other masters.
What to expect
Physical food
Our walk will start in the center, near the Rembrandt monument. The figures at its base are characters from the master's main masterpiece, the 'Night Watch'. The tour will end at this painting, but already in the Rijksmuseum. I will take you to an alley where a historical Amsterdam 'eatery' is hidden - here you will rarely see tourists, but locals regularly have lunch. You can snack on a bun with warm meat and traditional peanut or other sauce. Try chicken soup 'like grandma's' or the masterpiece of 'deep-fried art' - a meat croquette. We will continue, along the way admiring the Mint Tower with its onion dome and enjoying the view of the Flower Market from the bridge. We will peek into a shop filled with faience: you will learn to distinguish Chinese porcelain from Delft faience and hear about the items that decorated the kitchens of the burgers since the Golden Age. If desired, in a specialized store, we will taste your favorite varieties of cheese - or all at once: discover new flavors and aromas. And we will definitely try the queen of Dutch fast food - herring, with onions or without and with various ingredients.
Spiritual food
For dessert, you will be treated to an apple pie at the museum - the best in Amsterdam! Refreshed with coffee or seasonal beer, we will head to the Golden Age section: you will witness a real Dutch feast. A joyful boozer raises his glass in greeting by Hal's brush, Floris Van Dyck has a stack of cheese heads ready, and a servant in Van Der Helst's painting brings in a pie on a large tray. You will learn about the main masterpieces of Dutch painting, uncover the characteristic details of famous still lifes, and be charmed by the skill of the artists. You will try to guess why artists 'hung' spirals of lemon peel from the tabletop and what plates are on the table - Chinese porcelain or Delft faience? We will marvel at the way the Dutch eat with a knife and 'dress up' pies with turkey meat puppets, talk about the banquet games the burgers played 400 years ago. And the tour will end at Rembrandt's painting 'Night Watch', the restoration of which is currently taking place before our eyes. You will hear about its creation and artistic features, and also ponder whether the chicken depicted in the painting will end up in the soup.
