About this experience
The 'Green Horseshoe' or 'necklace' of Zagreb significantly differs from the Upper Town in its sophistication: here, monuments from the 19th and 20th centuries with wide avenues replace the Middle Ages. You will learn about the amazing stories of that era that the city at the crossroads of Eastern and Central Europe holds. And over a cup of coffee in a 'local' establishment, you will hear about modern local traditions.
What to expect
Aristocratic Zagreb in detail
You will walk through the most famous and romantic parks, admiring the historical buildings of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's golden age that surround them. We will discuss the key moments of the country's history associated with this part of the city. You will find out where the gentlemen who arrived on the famous Orient Express stayed, what is the specificity of the 'Russian trace' in Croatia, and what is interesting about the local currency. I will tell you why the markets of Zagreb are curious and important and whether they have any 'specialization'. You will also discover where the 'landed Sun' is located, and who the 'Croatian giants' are.
The city in modern times
The route of the walk will take you through the most significant central streets of the city. Along the way, we will talk not only about the past but also about the traditions and peculiarities of contemporary city life, where 'everything is at hand'. We will discuss the modern way of life of the locals and how history and the unique combination of continental and Mediterranean cultures in one metropolis have influenced it. And after the tour, you can enjoy a cup of aromatic coffee in a historic or modern 'local' café.
Additional options and tips from a local resident
Depending on your interests and preferences, we can visit the warm Botanical Garden of Zagreb in the warmer months, and in winter— the not boring Ethnographic or Art Museum. We will discuss what other interesting museums and parks, as well as restaurants, cafes, and markets are worth visiting independently and when it is best to do so. I will also tell you where the residents of Zagreb prefer to go shopping and what else is worth seeing beyond the city.
