About this experience
You often hear: 'Venice is sinking and will soon disappear'. The technical side of the city's life is not less fascinating than its architectural heritage. In a relaxed and engaging format, I will tell you about Venice's structure: from tide markers and water pipes to dams, wells, and sewage systems. You will learn how locals cope with floods and try to preserve this unique city. Additionally, you will visit a mask workshop, see magnificent palaces, and hear urban legends.
What to Expect
Venice through an Engineer's Eyes
You will visit the famous Venetian districts: Rialto, San Marco, Dorsoduro, Castello, and Cannaregio. See the palaces where legendary artists like Canaletto and Tintoretto once lived and hear their stories. I will explain how Venice was built, where the piles came from, whether the city has a water supply system, how fresh water was preserved in wells, and how the sewage system works. I'll address popular questions like whether Venice is indeed sinking and what measures are taken during the annual 'aqua alta' flooding. I will also explain and demonstrate some technical aspects of the city's life support systems: wells, 'sewage', water supply, chimney stacks, and beacons used by Venetians to gauge tides.
History of Gondolas and Carnival Masks
You will learn about the history of Venetian water transport, its technical peculiarities – I will have photos, illustrations, and diagrams. Discover the number of gondoliers in the city and uncover the secret of who and how can pursue this romantic profession. You will then visit a mask workshop to understand why the carnival holds such significance in Venice. I will show you the 'Fists Bridge,' where traditionally two Venetian factions – 'Castellani' and 'Nicolotti' – settled disputes. In the past, there were no railings on the bridge, and opponents' task was to push each other into the canal. To wrap up, I'll provide some practical tips for enjoying your time in the legendary city on water and show you the coziest cafes and trattorias where locals go for coffee, spritz, and to meet friends.
