About this experience
Located about an hour's drive from the capital, there is a practically deserted area in Georgia, where there are almost no settlements and the typical vegetation of other regions is absent. Away from the hustle and bustle of human life, amidst the surrounding harsh beauty, and probably due to the special energy of the place, Saint David founded the foundation of a monastery a thousand and a half years ago, which later became the country's most important spiritual and cultural center. The birth of Christianity on Georgian land, the history and legends of the religious complex, and the unusual natural landscapes will be the main objects of your attention on this tour.
What to Expect
Path to the Ancient Monastery
We will meet in Tbilisi and head southeast towards the Georgian-Azerbaijani border. The only village you will encounter on the way to the monastery, as if justifying its location in a dry area, is called Udabno (desert - in Georgian). Along the way, you will observe the natural landscape of the surroundings - a waterless steppe that changes color depending on the season, rows of hills with whimsical 'design', and distant views of the Caucasus Mountains. After short stops for photo sessions at the salt lake and/or other favorite spots, we will arrive at the main destination - the functioning male monastery.
Lavra of Saint David
Among the many historically significant architectural and pictorial natural monuments of the country, the David-Gareji Monastic Complex rightfully holds a special place. In the Middle Ages, it covered a vast territory. Its offshoots - carved rock churches, monks' cells, and utility rooms - were sometimes located far from each other and scattered over several square kilometers. During the tour, I will tell you about the origins of Christian monasticism in Georgia, the founding of the monastery, and the legends associated with its construction.
Trekking and Scenic Views of the Surroundings
Next, you will embark on a two-hour hike to the ridge, which formally serves as the border between two countries, stroll along the opposite slope, and descend along the trail on the other side. During the hike, you will explore the rock-carved premises of the ancient Tetri Udabno monastery with fragments of preserved wall paintings - interesting examples of Georgian medieval monumental painting. You will also take in the aerial views of the plains of neighboring Azerbaijan.
Cave Monastery of Natlismcemeli
You can conclude the tour by visiting another cave monastery, named after John the Baptist. The abode is part of the David-Gareji complex and is located in an equally picturesque location. However, few travelers and pilgrims venture here due to its remote location from the beaten paths.
Before returning to Tbilisi, we can have lunch at a charming Polish-Georgian cafe (seasonal: from April to October).

No complaints to the driver and tour guide. We express our gratitude to both of them. There is a wish. I think we should warn that due to the absence of demarcation of the border with Azerbaijan to this day, it is possible to see only one object (although very worthy). It is also necessary to have h...
