About this experience
David-Gareji is an extraordinary Christian complex built in the desert. You will travel to it in a comfortable transport with a group of up to 10 people. Wander through the rock-hewn caves, admire ancient Christian frescoes. Enjoy the otherworldly deserted landscapes not typical of Georgia and discover the country in a new light.
What to Expect
- Picturesque drive with photo stops. Head east to the Georgian-Azerbaijani border. Admire the changing colors of the steppe, whimsically shaped hills, a salty lake, and the majestic Caucasus Mountains. We will make short stops at the most beautiful spots for photos.
- David-Gareji Monastery Complex. Visit the famous Lavra of St. David from the 6th century, renowned throughout the Christian world. As it is an active male monastery, we will explore it from the outside. However, we will enter the Church of the Transfiguration, where the relics of St. David are located. Approach the graves of the Russian writer Griboedov and his wife. Also, visit the cave temple of Natlismtsemeli.
- Mountain trekking. Embark on a two-hour hike up the slope with views of neighboring Azerbaijan. Along the way, we will show you the rock-hewn caves of the ancient Tetri-Udabno monastery adorned with medieval frescoes.
- Wine tasting. Visit the famous Patardzeuli winery and sample aromatic local wines.
