About this experience
Our guided tour will introduce you to the history and life of the cozy, Teutonic, gingerbread Gdansk. The excursion covers two alternating routes that encompass the oldest districts of the city - the Main and Old Town. Each of them will reveal to you the past of Gdansk, its architectural heritage, and color!
What to expect
We have prepared two intensive routes through the key places of Gdansk. We recommend starting your acquaintance with the city with the Red route and then delving into the history of Gdansk on a walk along the Blue route the next day.
Red route: Golden Age of Gdansk
This route will introduce you to the Main Place: we will pass through the complex of city gates - from street to water gates, admire the restored stone houses, discuss who from the residents of Gdansk settled in them in different eras. We'll talk about the era of the Teutonic Order's rule and why it became the heyday of Gdansk. We will look at the city's symbols: the Town Hall and Artus Court, St. Mary's Cathedral, and Neptune Fountain. And on the embankment of the Motlawa River, we will talk about the history of navigation and trade in Gdansk.
Blue route: from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century
This route focuses on the epochs of Gdansk before and after the Teutonic Knights. We will walk through the streets of the Old Town, talk about the role of Gdansk in the lives of great scientists, philosophers, and writers. We will see the oldest water mill in Europe and understand the principle of its operation. We will listen to the carillons of the St. Catherine's Church with a complex history, peek into the St. Bridget's Church with an amber altar, see the oldest building in the city. And you will learn to recognize the architecture of Mannerism and find out what the local post office building is notorious for.
