About this experience
My tour is for those who want to see more than just the ancient buildings of Samarkand. We will visit the craftsmen who have made great efforts to restore ancient carpet weaving techniques, silk paper production, and oil extraction. We will participate in the production processes and then stroll through the main attractions of the city.
What to Expect
- Konigil Craftsmen Village. We will visit local workshops where Samarkand silk paper, unique ziggurat oil, and pottery are produced. We will see the production processes and understand their nuances.
- Carpet Workshop - the only one in Samarkand where silk and wool carpets are still woven by hand using ancient techniques. This is why the local carpets are considered incredibly high-quality. You will observe the weaving process, try to make a couple of knots yourself, and the masters will teach you how to distinguish handmade work from factory-made.
- Siab Bazaar - the oldest bazaar in Central Asia. Here you can buy Eastern sweets and enjoy bargaining.
- Bibi-Khanym Mosque - a magnificent mosque left by Amir Timur. You will hear legends associated with this place and learn who Bibi-Khanym was.
- Registan Square - the hallmark of Samarkand. We will explore the ensemble of medreses Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor, and Tilya-Kori. We will talk about Islamic architecture, the structure of medreses, and who the Uzbeks are.
- Gur-Emir Mausoleum - the burial place of the great Amir Timur. We will discuss the fate of Amir and the legacy his dynasty left in world history. And we will also find out what Sufism is.
