About this experience
In China, it is not always clear what is authentic and what is stylized. Copying landmarks is one of the favorite pastimes in the country. We will teach you to notice the differences. First, we will visit the most authentic section of the Great Wall at Simatai. And then we will head to Gubei, a city replica of ancient water settlements. We will explore the 'ancient' houses and visit a distillery where they make Chinese baijiu vodka.
What to Expect
Simatai Section of the Great Wall
We will visit the section of the Great Wall at Simatai, which has preserved its original appearance from the Ming Dynasty era. The ruins of the towers here have been designated by UNESCO as the 'original Great Wall of China.' You will climb the wall (by foot or cable car, as you wish), admire the surroundings from a height, and learn more details about the uniqueness of this section.
Water Town Gubei
Located at the entrance to Simatai is the amazing Gubei Water Town with a park area - a modern creation in ancient Chinese style. The buildings in Gubei are constructed in the style of the Qin and Ming dynasties, with some references to early 20th-century architecture. The park is stylized after the ancient Uizhen village with famous bridges and canals. Copying landmarks in China is a trend of the decade.
We will stroll through the park, enjoy the views and 'old-fashioned' architecture. Also:
- Cross the stone bridge over the Tanhe River to the Republican Street, built in the style characteristic of China in 1912-1949. It also resembles Qianmen Street in Beijing but is less bustling.
- Explore the water area of Gubei. You will get an idea of how Chinese water settlements like Uizhen, Zhouzhuang, and Tunli look. See picturesque canals, tall semicircular bridges over them, and colorful houses on the water.
- Visit the cellar-distillery where fragrant Chinese baijiu vodka is made. Nearby is a shop where you can taste the drink and buy yourself a bottle.
