About this experience
I want to show you a very special Rome - cinematic. Here, in the brilliant films of R. Rossellini and L. Visconti, neorealism was born. This city became the material for the fantastic cinema dreams of F. Fellini.
Program
So, here is our script:
- Let's start with Piazza del Popolo, visit Cafe Canova, where Fellini used to drink coffee and read the fresh newspaper in the mornings. The main thing in the world of neorealism is a person, a character. Just sit at a table in any cafe in Rome and observe the crowd, visit a colorful local market, or on Sunday take a walk through the flea market at Porta Portese, and at every step you will meet characters and types as if they have just stepped off the screen.
- Not far away begins Via Margutta. Fellini and his wife and muse Giulietta Masina lived here for many years. Let's walk through the nearby streets, we can visit the restaurant "Il Margutta" (a place the director often visited) or stop for an aperitif at the famous wine bar "Il Buccone" on Via Ripetta.
- Walking along the lively Via del Babuino with its famous talking statue (also in the spirit of Fellini), we will reach Piazza di Spagna - where one of the scenes of Fellini's early film "Swindlers" was played out.
- Next awaits us the Trevi Fountain - who doesn't remember the famous scenes from "La Dolce Vita"? Five minutes - and we are on Via Avignonesi, where in house number 32, in the old theater "Capitani", Rossellini (Fellini was his screenwriter) filmed the manifesto of neorealism - "Rome, Open City".
- Another street became a movie star thanks to Fellini - Via Veneto. Paparazzi no longer run along it in search of celebrities, the rich from all over the world no longer sit in the restaurants, but with a little imagination - we are back in the 60s and the colorful whirlwind of the "sweet life" unfolds before our eyes.
- Now we dive into the metro (the atmosphere of the Roman underground is also worthy of Fellini) and head to "Cinecittà" (the holy of holies of Italian cinema). Here I will show you the pavilions where famous Italian directors worked, Fellini's office and his chair.
- Upon returning, you can have dinner at one of Fellini's favorite restaurants in Rome - "Al Moro", not far from the Trevi Fountain, with typical Roman cuisine.
- The finale of our film together is open: the next day I suggest you take a look at Rome from above, from characteristic roofs and terraces, often adorned with laundry, and then from Termini Station, another "character" of Fellini's films, take a trip to Ostia - the nearest seaside of Rome (the road there and back will take us about an hour), beloved by the director and always reminiscent of his hometown Rimini. Here we will walk along the beaches where many scenes of "The White Sheik" and 8½ were shot. I recommend having lunch at "La Vecchia Pineta" - another favorite restaurant of the director.
Organizational Details
- This tour is rightly called 1½ Day with Fellini! If you are unable to complete our walk in full (1½ days), we can limit ourselves to its first part (1 day). This is the main walk. The second day is optional! The cost of a one-day walk is €48.
- The tour to "Cinecittà" must be booked in advance, the cost of the walk does not include tickets to "Cinecittà", metro fare, and meals. The cost of the trip to Ostia is the metro ticket (in Rome it costs €1.5). The cost of one ticket to Cinecittà is €10. The duration of the walk on the first day is 4 hours, on the second day 3 hours.

We visited about 7 excursions with different guides in Rome, but Veronica is the best guide of all! Incredibly deep knowledge, sincere interest in what she talks about, lively and informal approach - that's all about her. My husband and I were delighted with the excursion, unfortunately we were only...

I recommend taking the opportunity to enjoy a walk away from super touristy sites and tourists. To see Rome and its streets in black and white movie stills accompanied by a story about this very cinema. For those who are not in a hurry and do not strive to cover the vast in one day. Thank you, Veron...
