Soulful Walking Tour of Rome
About this experience
This tour is a concise and informal guide for those visiting Rome for the first time. I will show you the must-see places and secret panoramic spots, accompanying historical facts with ancient legends. I will also tell you where to go for the real Roman atmosphere, typical cuisine, the best gelato, and excellent aperitifs.
What to Expect
Exploring the Italian capital at an Italian pace
Embracing the vast Rome is possible, paradoxically, only if you stroll through it leisurely, or as the locals say, at a 'piano-piano' pace. Thoughtfully and unhurriedly, you will take the first steps to get acquainted with the ancient city and learn to navigate its main attractions, while peeking into secluded non-touristy corners with a typical Roman atmosphere. Additionally, I will show you where to find the most delicious Italian gelato, which establishments offer authentic dishes of the capital, and I will tell you where to go for an aperitif. And if you wish, I will share a whole list of great ideas for Rome, which I will send to you in PDF format after the tour.
Legacy of Ancient Rome
The walk will start at Palazzo Massimo, opposite which you will see the ancient Roman baths. Through the cozy streets of the Monti district, we will reach the great Colosseum. You will glimpse the masterpiece of the Ancient World from the best secret angle and hear the most intriguing stories from its rich 'biography'. Along the ruins of the Roman Forums, we will talk about the former center of Roman life and the era of the republic, and at Piazza Venezia, I will help you locate the balcony from which Mussolini spoke. On the Capitoline Hill, you will be greeted with new impressive views and another dose of stories about the legacy of the Roman Empire. And by the sculpture of the Capitoline Wolf, you will refresh the legend of the founding of the Eternal City and the famous twins - Romulus and Remus.
Jewish Ghetto and the 'Brother' of the Colosseum
Next on the agenda is the authentic Jewish Ghetto, one of the oldest in Europe, where Jews settled even before the spread of Christianity. You will learn about different periods in terms of the local authorities' attitude towards this people and the memorable places that have become an integral colorful part of the city. Then you will meet the 'elder brother' of the Colosseum - Theatre of Marcellus and its traditions. You will see the place where, according to legends, Caesar was killed and the temple of all gods - Pantheon, where we will discuss the first pagan temples, illuminated as Christian churches.
'Star' Places of Rome
You will also stroll through winding alleys to those very places that many are familiar with from movies. You will encounter the Trevi Fountain from the movie 'La Dolce Vita' - while inspecting the facade of Palazzo Poli where it is located, you will hear about the 1830s when Zinaida Volkonskaya lived here, and her salons were visited by Brullov, Gogol, Tyutchev, Sir Walter Scott, and other famous personalities. And finally, you will climb the Spanish Steps from 'Roman Holiday', at the top of which stands the famous church Trinità dei Monti. Here we will bid farewell, and you can continue your walk or relax in the beautiful Villa Borghese park.
