Region's History
Georgian-Turkish border often serves as the starting point for various routes, embodying a contrast of religions: on the Georgian side - an Orthodox church, on the Turkish side - a mosque. In 800 meters from the border stands the monument to Andrew the First-Called, symbolizing the path to Iberia, which the apostle followed after the Ascension. Famous words "The road of Georgia is the road of enlightenment of Andrew the First-Called" - refer to this area. On the tour, you will learn about the region's development, the legends and myths surrounding its history, and who the Adjarians are.
Oldest Fortress of Georgia
At the mouth of the river Chorokhi, you will see the remains of the Gonio-Apsaros fortress, with a history spanning millennia. It was once a Roman outpost, and legend has it that it was here where the son of King Aeetes, Apsyrtus, slain by Jason, was buried. Also, the grave believed to be the final resting place of the apostle Matthew is located here. You will learn not only the fortress's legends but also about the peculiarities of its architecture and layout, surprisingly preserved from the Roman Empire times.
