Located at the foot of the snow-capped mountains of Zailiyskiy Alatau, and in summer surrounded by greenery, Almaty is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful cities of the Soviet era in Central Asia. During the tour, you will learn the history and feel the charm of the 'southern capital' of Kazakhstan: drive through the main streets, explore the Monument of Independence, see the wooden cathedral and high-altitude skating rink, and of course, enjoy picturesque views from the top of Kok-Tobe.
What to expect
Walk in the historical park
You will drive through the main streets of Almaty, discovering the city's history and stopping at the most interesting sights. In the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park of the Heroes of the Soviet Union memorial, you will learn about the legendary Panfilov Division and the heroes of Almaty who stopped the advance of fascist tanks in Moscow during the Great Patriotic War. In the park, you will also admire the Ascension Cathedral: a unique monument of wooden architecture designed by architect Zenkov.
Symbols of Almaty
On the way, you will see iconic city buildings - the Abay Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Palace of the Republic, and the Islamic Cultural Center. And of course, you will see the Monument of Independence - a symbol not only of the city but of all modern Kazakhstan. You will examine the artistic cast iron grilles framing the central stela, which narrate the epochal events in the country's history. At the foot of the obelisk, you will see the handprint of the president, learn about 'kulpytas,' and get acquainted with the quotes of outstanding figures in science, culture, and statehood.
'In Medeo, where 'Ice' rhymes with 'Flight!'
Following the words of poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, you will visit the area where the world's highest mountain sports complex is located. Here, at the Medeo skating rink, future champions in speed skating and figure skating train. You will learn about the historical facts and geographical features of this place, enjoying the dizzying landscapes of Zailiyskiy Alatau. And if desired, you can take the cable car to the Shymbulak ski resort, located at an altitude of 2260 meters above sea level.
Back to the mountains again!
Your acquaintance with the mountainous terrain of Almaty will continue at Kok-Tobe, where you will enjoy magnificent views of the entire city. You will take a cable car ride in a cozy aerial tramcar: during the 6-minute ride, you will pass by gardens and private houses, followed by the endless high-rises of the new city. At the top, in Kok-Tobe Park, you will make a wish at the special 'apple' fountain and learn some facts about the Almaty TV tower.
